In other words, an overcoat costing in the general vicinity of a month's pay.

    Kinda puts things in perspective..........

From a different view point... they were getting overcoats issued in December 1862. Some with capes, others without. The military man in me abhors the lack of uniformity, but the result can not be denied.

Will, you're a good man. Thanks for posting the research for us.

Sir, my wife's great grandfather served with the 14th Regiment N.C. Troops along with the 2nd Regiment N.C. State Troops, 4th Regiment N.C. State Troops and the 30th Regiment N.C. Troops in General Ramseur's Brigade.
This little bit of paper work sheds a little more color to the picture I have of her maternal ancestor...,
yes, perhaps he drew some of these listed items...
          Thanks for posting.

Like the reference to fly tents and a time reference to go with it. Thanks for sharing.

Good point Ross, You can put a lot of men under 20 tent flies.

Something else to ponder... look at the 30 March roll up for all supplies issued. 1600 pairs of shoes.

Hello, I love this-- different prices for jackets, overcoats, shirts-- that means, a uniform jacket and pants, one set at $10.50 and a second at $13.75 means what? That these two items were of a different cloth, maybe different cut and maybe different base color, and worn by the men in the same Regiment. "No two dressed alike, a mix in uniform and clothing"-- descriptions like this, now you know where they came from.

                  Mel,

I had 5 GGG Uncles in the 14th North Carolina. Four of them were in Co. I and One was in Co. F., so I had a interest in these QM issues as well.

                  Pete,

If you look at the Tramp Brigade records from fall of 1862 you can see that they are still being issued "Coats" and not "Jackets". I wonder if this is a state issue thing.

                  Everyone,

Thank you for the kind words, as I have time I will keep digging. I'll have to see what random C.S. unit strikes me as worth digging into next.....

Will, I feel these papers bring us closer to those folks here before us.., like touching the hand that touched the hand.
You may have this already, by Alexander Davis Betts, "Experience of a Confederate Chaplain, 1861, 1864."
Alexander Betts was Chaplain for the 30th Regiment N.C. Troops, Ramseur's Brigade.
His diary is full of references to regimental and brigade movements, locations, weather of the day...
                    and of course, his thoughts.
                    Again, thanks for the post.
