  • QM Papers of Various Brigade QM's, Cleburne's Division 1862-1863

    Footnote is great isn't it?

Anyway I've assembled some records from a few of the Brigade Quatermasters of Cleburne's division, most of the records are from the 2nd Quarter of 1863, with a few from later in that year and a few more from late 1862. Note the bolts of "English Cloth" being issued, perhaps being sold to officers?

This is a ongoing project, will keep posting more as I find it.

You're probably right about the bolts of cloth, but I wonder if anyone would care to speculate as to whether some might have been issued to regiments to sew their own clothing, much like that of the old "company tailor" practice of the pre-war regular army, or the navies of both sides?

It is fun to speculate from the surviving documents.

      "Oct. 12th 1862

      10 Wool Shirts @ $3.75 ea
      75 pr Blue Pants @ $8.25 ea
      11 White Shirts @ $1.00 ea
      17 pr shoes @ $4.50 ea
      12 pr shoes @ $3.50 ea
      17 Uniform Jackets & Pants @ $13.50 per uniform
      10 Uniform Jackets & Pants @ $10.75 per uniform
      8 Jackets @ $8.25 ea"

What color are the "75 pr Blue Pants @ $8.25 ea"? Could they be Sky Blue Kersey? The document doesn't say!
As I said, Speculation is fun stuff, but not very reliable research. Not until other documentation comes up to help verify that speculation.

        Ross,

When I saw the "English Cloth" on there I couldn't help but to think of Fremantle's quote about AoT officers in blue-gray uniforms. It's around the same time frame too.
