Footnote scans the microfilm from the National Archives into it's computer database. So the microfilm they use is housed at the Archives in Washington D.C. The link below is an old press release from NARA.

Yes sir! The National Archives....Thank you! However, does Footnote- "footnote" the records? Then, am I correct to assume they came from the Confederate officers Service files for Lt. Allen? Hope so. Glad to see Footnote getting them up.
I ask as a way to highlight some good sources of research. I have found these service files records are an incrediably deep source of wonderful information. One can find some incredible things under very obscure names. In this example, some gems were found concerning the arms, equipment, etc. for this unit. I have often found much the same when I did research. Sometimes, an obscure ordnance or quartermaster officer attached to a general will have a significant file of records and correspondencein his file. Especially relative to issue of arms and equipment and the nuances. Sadly, the way they were filed in the 1880's often one only finds one side of the correspondence but if you look at the "to or from" person's file you might find the other side of the correspondence. Anyway, some might find this interesting and fun.
Another good source for similar AOT information is the state archives. For example, in Jackson Miss. they have the files of the Army of Mississippi and some for the AOT. Much of it under Hypolite Oladowski. HO was the chief ordnance officer. Great things there that you would not expect! Infantry is not my thing but I know there to be some good stuff (significant quartermaster and ordnance records) sitting there collecting dust that has not seen the light of day for a long time.
About 15 or 20 years ago I was doing some research. Some of the documents had not been checked out since the late 1940's but, the person who last did so was no less that Frank Vandiver in his research for his book on Josiah Gorgas "Ploushares into Swords..." Not long afterwards I called him. He was delightful and told me wonderful stories about his research on this book which included visiting (at Gorgas home in Tuscaloosa Ala) and drinking Mint Juliups with two of J Gorgas surviving daughters during WWII! It was there, after a tedious, difficult, old South "courtship" of the old ladies that he was finally allowed access to an old trunk of Gorgas's personal papers, files and journals. This became another of Vandiver's wonderful books. Funny but sometimes our links are not so distant. Sorry to go on.
Anyway, check out the state archives too. Especially Mississippi for you AOT guys. Good stuff there waiting to be discovered!

I found the issue of canteen straps as a separate item to be very interesting. I have always thought canteens and straps were issued separately, but this was the first time I've seen actual issue records that show canteens and their straps as separate items.

i am struck by the screw driver in the inventory and have wondered for some time how long that term had been in use. i had heard of "turn screws" and assumed these refered to today's screwdrivers. was the term a direct quote from the records? i sure they were calling them screwdrivers, i've just never actually read it.

Had the great good fortune to have Frank Vandiver as Provost at Rice University when I was a freshman and sophomore. He gave numerous informal history presentations on everything from the CW to chasing Pancho Villa. We loved them and his books. When he left for the same job at Texas A&M we were crushed.
