Re: I Need Assistance - French Light Infantry Gear -
Could you please narrow that down a bit? Indicating the specific time and place - during our Civil War - could help you get a better response. Or keep this thread from being closed. Your choice.
Re: I Need Assistance - French Light Infantry Gear -

Re: I Need Assistance - French Light Infantry Gear -
The French Chausser equipment was issued to the 18th Mass INF in early 1862 after winning a brigade drill contest. I'm not sure how long through the Pennisula Campaign they kept it. C&D Jarnigan (Unapproved vendor) also has pictures of 1840 french gear on thier webpage.

As used in the Civil War by North or South .With out much commentary ,I have a great deal of Line Drawings with measurements for the French uniforms and gear such as the kapies, shakos and shirt ,knapsack etc. I need detailed pictures .Thank You, Conley Sluss
Re: I Need Assistance - French Light Infantry Gear -
Scott-The French Kapi is the same as ours -as we copyped it - the shako - there are many types - the ones like ours and the ones that look like our forge cap but "stiff and tall" leather ones ,like you posted - I have the drawings for them ,I need more detailed pictures -Thank you for your input -regards Conley Sluss
Re: I Need Assistance - French Light Infantry Gear -
I have several references to French Army gear as exported by Alexis Godilot for the Chasseur equipment.
Send me a PM and I will scan some for you.
The hardest item will be the mess tin as you would have to go to France to get one.
I own a decent period shako made of leather, no plate.
Re: I Need Assistance - French Light Infantry Gear -
So far as I know our kepi is not close copy of what French infantry wore, I was suprised to find that the Chasseurs evidently didn't wear a "Chasseur cap" but rather the shako and "police bonnet" or side cap.
What I can help you with is a photo of a canteen - it is quite similar to the Confederate filter canteens, but different in some details. http://humanbonb.free.fr/indexGourdes.html - scroll to the bottom.
The mess tin "Gamele"? is pattern of 1851 - still in use in the Great War.
Somewhere on this forum are some photos of the pack...normally it was cowhide with hair still on it...
Re: I Need Assistance - French Light Infantry Gear -
David -Thank you for your input - the shirt information is very help full - but the French were useing the Kepi back in the 1830s pedates our use of it.Erik ,I sent you a PM -Thank You all for your help - Conley Sluss

Here's are photos of a CW period Zouave manniquin and another soldier (Chasseur?) in the French National Military Museum in Paris . I had the good fortune to visit the museum in September and took the pics. Maybe they will help.
