  • 1858 Officer Hardee Hat - Knitted Rosette

Is there a source for the black, knitted rosette to which the ostrich plumes are attached to an officer's Hardee hat? I've seen the rosettes on some examples of staff officer's Hardee hats? Some have had brass buttons in the middle of the rosette. Was that typical/atypical?

    Thanks,
