    Re: State Buckles

    Jim,

Thanks for the info, this area is part of the Petersburg defensive lines, IIRC. I had many a SC and NC relative in those trenches. Ever dig in any early to mid war sites? I wonder if the ratio of "State" to "Generic infantry button" is any different.

Were they the standard pewter "C.S.A." plates?

yep. I had one that I bought as my 1st belt plate back in '95 for $5 and one of the hooks broke off. Haven't seen another repop since, though rumor is my buddy Brad Malone can make them.
I've always heard these were pretty rare but this cat had 2 sitting side by side. He had 4 of the CS line in hook plates. need to get me one of those.

              Re: State Buckles

The early war sites on the Va. Penninsula yielded many state buttons since troops usually had their 1st uniform. During the 61/62 time frame when units were more or less stationary and camped nearby many state buttons were found. One 4th Georgia camp near the James River yielded around 40 GA. buttons. There were many LA buttons found in a 1st LA camp nearby. The hut sites could still be seen when a road was cut through the middle. A friend of mine found 15 in one day after the road was cut. When soldiers started getting their clothing issued from a depot it may have been up to the individual to transfer what state buttons he had left to his new coat.
