  • Austrian Lorenz Scabbard

Is anyone out there reproducing an authentic scabbard for the Austrian Lorenz bayonet? I landed on the scabbard that came with it from Loyalist Arms and the leather and stitching ripped. I redid the stitching and it tore again this time just ripping the leather. My stitching will be there from now on but that leather just ain't gonna do it.

Talking to a few people that scabbard may not have been correct to start with. So here I am... Is anybody out there reproducing these things and making them outta decent leather. I know no leather is bomb proof but there is such a thing as quality leather. I would even consider painted canvas as long as its correct and quality.

If no body is reproducing them who can you recommend that might custom make me one. Thanks!

Duvall Leathwork reproductions are the best I know of specifically for lorenz bayonets. But I am sure that Missouri Boot & Shoe or L.D. Haning could also custom make one for you.

Depends upon what you mean by "authentic." The Austrian manufactured scabbards for Muster 1854 bayonets were made of wood, covered with black leather, and iron or brass mounted. I know of no one who reproduces them. An American pattern leather scabbard, made longer and modified to fit the quadrangular Austrian blade, was manufactured here to replace worn out Austrian scabbards. I believe Duval makes reproductions of those.

          Re: Austrian Lorenz Scabbard

I have never seen any invoices or evidence that the Lorenz bayonets were imported with the wooden Austrian scabbards however that doesn't mean that some were not bought at the same time the gun and bayonet was. There is plenty of evidence that the Lorenz bayonets were carried in the US type scabbard.

I requested David Jarnagin make a CS scabbard with lead finial for my Austrian Lorenz bayonet about 12 or 15 years ago. I am completely satisfied with it. I am not aware of any surviving CS documented Lorenz scabbard. That is why I had the generic lead finial, Richmond type scabbard made.

The US Lorenz scabbards that I have seen have two types of scabbard openings. One is an oval scabbard opening and the other has a four sided opening. Of course they are longer than the M-55 scabbards to accept the longer bayonet. I have one shown on the top of this page http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/j_mayo/scabbard.html that came with a Springfield bayonet inside.

At one time an image was discussed on the forum with a group of Federals armed with Lorenz rifles carrying the bayonets in M55 Scabbards. Of course the bayonets are too long for the scabbard and this can be seen in the picture.

I had Robert Serio of Missouri Boot and Shoe make a scabbard for my original Lorenz bayonet. I sent the bayonet measurements to him and I had my scabbard in short order. As with all Robert's work the quality is top notch. As for a true leather covered wood original, I know of no option other than an original.

I got mine from Serio, as well, and am completely satisfied with it. I sent my bayonet to him so he could fit the scabbard. Fit is perfect.

I know of a few folks in this area ( Dalton, Georgia ) that have recovered some of the iron tips that you see on the end of those original Austrian scabbards.

Contact Joe Walker on this forum, he had one that he had "reworked" for sale a while back. If not, one of the fine vendors above can take care of you. See ya, Andy.

Some info and a good picture of the scabbard from Tim Prince's page.

                    Andy,

I've made piles of Federal and Confederate scabbards to fit Lorenz bayonets. I have an original Lorenz bayonet in my shop so there is no need to even send your bayonet! If you do order a scabbard from me, simply select the bayonet type as Lorenz and I will take it from there! Turn around time is about 2 weeks on a scabbard.

I hope to make you an awesome scabbard soon...
