Friends,
I have been doing research on the uniforms of the Vicksburg Southrons (aka Volunteer Southrons), a pre-war militia company from the city that later became Co A, 21st MS Infantry, and I found this description of their uniforms in their unit minutes book at the Old Court House Museum.
"Style of Uniform
Dark Blue Cloth Single Breasted, One Row Buttons, 10 in number, Standing Collar to meet in front with hook and eye and to rise no higher than to permit the free turning of the chin – over it two loops 4 ½ inches long on each side of collar with 1 small uniform button at end of each loop. Collar edged all around with Scarlet Cass. Plain around cuff 2 inches deep slashed flap in sleeve four inches long 2 ¼ inches wide at points and 2 inches wide at narrowest point of curve with 3 loops and 3 small buttons. Loops placed at equal distances. Slashed flap in Skirts with 4 loops and large Buttons. The flaps on sleeves and skirts to be edged with Scarlet in the ends and indented edge 2 large Buttons at the waist – Skirts to extend within 3 ½ inches of bend of knee. Scarlet Cass turn backs and Skirt linings – Gold Embroidered Bugle at Bottom of Skirt, Loops on Collar and flaps to be of gold lace ½ inch wide and entire loops not to exceed 1 ¼ inch in breadth, Coat to be lined with Scarlet – Buttons [?] convex 7/8 diameter – [?]- Spread Eagle and Shield bearing the letters.
Shoulder Strap – Blue Cloth- Center Strap—Brass Crescent and Buff Fringe
Pants – Cloth Army Blue mixed, with Scarlet Stripe 1 ½ inches wide and welted at edges (for winter) Plain White Drilling for Summer."
We are holding an event here next month and I would like to attempt to reproduce it, but find that I am somewhat "sartorially challenged" and cannot visualize it's appearance. Any help from some of the more knowledgable members of the forum would therefore be greatly appreciated.
