Re: V S Belt Buckle
You mean one of these :
This is a repro from Hanover Brass. They identify it as, "Volunteer State Tennessee original found Cold Harbor, Va." Beyond that, good luck, Brian.Silas Tackitt,

Re: V S Belt Buckle
I'm assuming you mean the Volunteer State buckle? Please see the link below about mid way down the page is the V S buckle. Gary might be able to shed more light on these and I'll dig through my books to see where others have been dug.

Re: V S Belt Buckle
Didn't somebody find pictures of these on Virginians or Mississippians? I'll dig around and see if I can find some discussion. But sadly, I think Volunteer State was a shot in the dark by someone long ago.
Recently a Warren County, MS unit was discussed, and I found the link.

Re: V S Belt Buckle
The "VS" buckle was, in fact, worn by the Volunteer Southrons of Vicksburg, which later became a company in the 21st Mississippi. There was an entire article on this is a back issue of 'Military Images' magazine with illustrations showing ID'd members of the company wearing this plate. The attribution to Tennessee troops, i.e. Volunteer State, was always a real stretch and is one of the great Civil War urban legends that has persisted over the years. I have no doubt that it will persist yet. I'll see if I can locate the year and issue number of aforementioned Military Images article.Bob Williams

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana
