Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could point to some references for the Confederate Home Guard during the 1861-1865 period? I have been searching the web and have found some information but nothing definitive.
From what I can tell is they did or did not wear uniforms, were armed with military weapons supplied by the state or any odd weapon or hunting gun from home, may have or may not have been active in some battles, mostly spent time rounding up deserters or policing the neighborhood, etc. In other words it doesn't seem to be a lot to go on except they were an authorized group that held some type of semi official position.
Did they operate in conjunction with troops when they were in their area?
It also appears they were composed of men too old for the draft, or say 45 to 50 (ish) which fits me to a tee. Is there any organized group that includes home guard impressions? It seems like a quasi-military role more fitted for someone (like me) who looks a little too old to be running across a field with a pack.
I don't mind doing the research myself just if anyone remembers coming across decent references and could point me towards them I would be appreciative
Thank you
Joel Axenroth
