I am looking to have the canvas valise from the Kurtz collection from a 31st Mass LT made. I have sone basic info but was hoping to get more details from someone who viewed it in person. All I have to go on now are two photos, the 7”x16” dimensions and that it is canvas along with the story. Anything you might have would be very appreciative (construction notes, material notes, was it lined inside or reinforced besides the taping). I was thinking of using the duck cloth from W&W. Any other fabric recommendations would be appreciated as well. Thank you for any help or suggestions in advance.

Re: Canvas valise help
Jeremy,
That is one of my favorite pieces from that collection!
Looking closely at the high-res pics of it, you can clearly see the diagonal twill of the weave. I would not recommend duck cloth, but maybe a cotton drill.
Also, I wonder about the original color of the tape and ebroidery yarn. I would guess that they probably were not originally brown. And I wonder if he really intended for his name and the "US" within a shield to be in off-white braid on an off-white surface. I'd bet those probably faded, too... but what color they originally were is hard to tell.John Wickett

Re: Canvas valise help
Found someone who saw it in person. They said it is made from Russia Drilling. The trim was originally red except for the yarn vines which were brown. Even better I have someone who is willing to take on the project for me. Which is great since I do not really enjoy sewing and do not have skills I that area!
John, I have owed you a reply email for sometime. My apologies and one will be coming soon!
