Rather than alter my original Spencer to take a saber bayonet, I'm looking for the right spike bayonet for it. I know that the diamater of the socket needs to be .817", but I don't know enough about Army bayonets to know what will work. This size also fits original Sharps rifles. Any guidance out there?

Re: Spencer Bayonet
Please, under no circumstances should you ever consider modifying an original gun for reenacting or any other purpose. If you want/need a bayonet, they are available if often high priced. Try bayonet dealer John Gephardt. He does not currently have a website but he has been in business for about 25 years as a mail order and show seller. John, coincidentally, is also a Spencer collector and often has some of the various Spencer bayonets for sale. His email address is:

Re: Spencer Bayonet
You may try an original Enfield bayonet - one of my friends had a Spencer rifle that had an Enfield bayonet on it, it had been that way since the 1880s at least. I no longer rember how well it fit, but fit it did. Worth a try, and an original Enfield bayonet is cheaper than a Spencer, for sure...David Stone

Re: Spencer Bayonet
Hallo!
I went with a different tack, for my original and Romano Spencer. Since they vary in socket diamter, I modified an older Italian repro M1855 socket bayonet I had lying around.
I also did the same, with an Indian repro M1855 bayoent for my "Taylor" Sharps rifle.
After shopping, by trial-and-error fittings, to find one with a larger inside diameter socket, it took some Dremel Tool work slightly enlarging it, and then slightly filing the slot to fit the front sight base and height (about 10 minutes of bench fitting).

Re: Spencer Bayonet
I may have to wait until Conner Prairie to run through the sutlers and try a bunch of bayonets. And I'll see about other unit members' bayonets at our next drill - that will give me some idea what to look for.Bob Dispenza
