  • Wisconsin Vets Museum Dress Hat

I just noticed that the Vets Museum is selling a replia of a dress hat in their collection. I was wondering if anyone has purchased the hat or knows of its maker. The original hat is very cool looking and the replica looks spot on, from the photo. The question is who made the hat itself?

From the museum bookshop website, "$125.00 10000 Philander Wright 1863 Army Hat. Own a piece of Iron Brigade history! Based upon Philander Wright's Army Hat, this exclusive and unique item is a faithful reproduction of the "Gettysburg" hat in the Museum's collection. "

When I was at the WVM 12 years ago, we worked with Tim Bender at TP & H to have good quality M1858 Uniform Hats reproduced. My guess is that is the source, but I can't ask Bill Brewster, since he left WVM in January.

Thats a very interesting hat to reproduce. There is a photo of the original on P.83 of U.S. Army Headgear 1812-1872.

Are those brass grommeted ventilation holes on the illustrated hat?

          Mr. Sullivan,
They are. It is one of the more intresting aspects of the original hat. Second only to the history that hat saw.
