  • Stencils on Musket Crate

    Hallo Kameraden,
a friend of mine builds a Musket box with the measurement out of the 1862er Quatermaster Manual.
Now I am looking for the correct stencils to made and to stencil on, prefered from Springfield Armory.

To make this clearer Christof is not searching necessarily for stencils but for patterns i.e. picture or drawings of originals!

If I'm not mistaken weren't the original markings screen printed onto the boxes?

            Adam,

Although ancient in origin from China and used in Europe for wallpaper etc prior to the 1860's, "screen printing" as we know it did not become used in the US until the 20th century. Musket crates would have been stencilled if not hand lettered during the ACW.

              Re: Stencils on Musket Crate

Just checking - are you looking for the crate which held the muskets, or the box that held the ammunition? I could only find one musket crate in my notes, and that was an old Virginia Manufactory crate, pre civil war.

The musket crate not the ammo crate!

I would be interested in buying a pre-made stencil for a musket box if any has had them made

                    Re: Stencils on Musket Crate

I have lost the photos I had of a crate from Springfield on a computer crash. However, as I remember, it was quite similar to this postwar one -

I cannot remember now if the crate I saw said "rifle-muskets", or "muskets" - I do remember it saying "20" and "SPRINGFIELD" and "1861" - possibly "MODEL" as well as a "CAL. 58." It didn't say anything about bayonets, as I recall. The crate was dirty and weathered and it was hard to make out everything. There may have been some initials stenciled on one corner. There was a remnant of a small paper label - perhaps 3''x5'' both inside and outside of the lid. It was unpainted with black stenciling.

Here is one from Harpers Ferry - I do not know if they based this on something from the collection or not...
In John Brown's Fort. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Harpers Ferry, WV.

And just for "in case" - somebody might want a crate for converted smoothbore muskets -

I like the recessed spot for the paper disk label on this one.

Sorry I cannot help with real photos of a wartime crate but perhaps this is of a little help...

This pic of "replica- crates" was taken at Corinth, any idea, if they made after a real crate ?

I don't have any idea if it is based on anything real or just made up. But I am not sure if the crate I saw was from Springfield or from a contractor. It had nothing stenciled anywhere except the ends. It may have had an address written on top with a crayon or grease pencil, one word of which may have been "arsenal" - it was faint and much rubbed. If I ever stumble across the photos again, I'll be sure to post them.

At the National Park site of the Springfield Armory there is a crate in the collection. No picture - I may see if I can get one somehow. In the meantime here is hopefully a link of what is painted on the lid of the box at the museum-

Have you checked the LOC? I have read a series of articles regarding the M1863 Springfield which cited sources in the LOC. Trouble is, those were circulating in 2001ish. A topic I believe that they focused on was whether or not 63's were serviced in the Atlanta Campaign.

Don't want to mislead you here, but I do remember mention of crating. I believe that Mr. Jim Fields was either a co-author or somehow in research.

If you happen to locate these articles, please let me know. They were very interesting. I believe that there are some battlefields that refute the use of the M1863 at any point in the Atlanta Campaign?
