I was going through O'Donnell and Sylvia's '83 edition of "Civil War Canteens" and noticed that a few canteens were identified as Confederate copies of the Federal '58 smoothside canteens, one in particular is now identified as a Federal Cincinatti pattern with the rolled tin spout in O'Donnell's new book on US canteens. A few others that have the flattened rolled tin spouts are identified as mostlikely commercial copies of the Federal canteens in the new book also.
So my main question is did the Confederate depots produce a copy of the Federal '58 smoothside canteens or are they commercial copies? I'm referring to a completely Confederate made copy of a Federal '58 smoothside canteen, not an altered Federal canteen.
The canteen pictured below is in O'Donnell's book, but from first impression, I was thinking it was a Confederate copy due to the tin spout with the flat folded lip and the slightly differing sizes of the strap retainers that aren't lined up precisly. It appears to be made more crudely made than a regular Federal issued 58 canteen.
