  • Uniform question regarding 74th New York Infantry

    Hello All,

I am researching the Battle of Kettle Run and I am quite piqued by the uniforms that the 74th New York Infantry were wearing. I have looked at Troiani's Regiments and Soldiers book and New York State Military Museum's website. I'm hitting somewhat of a brick wall in researching the uniforms.

I have searched the Company of Military Historian's website for any articles that that institution may have published on the subject without luck.

    Thanks!

Re: Uniform question regarding 74th New York Infantry

The uniform of the zouave companies is well recorded in photograph and description, being a very true-to-the-original copy of the French style, and including yellow tombeaux on the vest as well as the jacket. The remainder of the unit was attired as chasseurs, and some of that uniform is hinted at in the picture of these musicians (George W. Hood is on the right.)

The kepis and trousers are very similar to those worn by their sister regiment, the 73rd NY (2nd Fire Zouaves) and it's not too hard to imagine their jackets being of the American-made "chasseur" style, too. (Think blue jacket with a short skirt, trimmed in light blue tape around the edges, trefoil designs on the cuffs.)

Hood is promoted to Principal Musician in '63, and photographed in his new uniform which, by that point, resembles a more "standard" shell jacket and issue trousers.

The 74th NY image was part of a lot that sold in the November, 2008 Heritage Auction Civil War cornucopia (lot 57719) that included drumsticks and other paper items from George Hood. The 73rd NY image is attributed to the Kean Wilcox collection, and is published from time to time as it's one of the few solid 73rd NY photos known. P. 132 of the Time-Life Master Index (of the "silver" series) features it.

Re: Uniform question regarding 74th New York Infantry

In the book "Zouaves: The First and the Bravest" (Michael J. McAfee).

Pg. 94 shows a photo of Lorenzo Clark, 74th New York Vol. Inf. c. 1861-61. The caption continues, "Although Clark supposedly was not in the Zouave company of the 74th, he was photographed in its distinctive uniform. An unusual feature of this uniform was the placement of tombeaux on both sides of the vest as well as the Zouave jacket." You can see this feature in the colored image above.

Pg. 90 says that Co. A was uniformed fully as Zouaves. I guess Co. B was too, but McAfee doesn't say this.

Here's the image - I can't believe I did it!!!! [Insert angels singing and trumpets here]
