  • First model Enfield information?

I can't seem to find much information about the first model Enfield. What I have found, suggests that it is a smooth bore and carries a different ram rod than the 3rd and 4th models that are more commonly seen. I was just looking for some info about this particular weapon. I have searched the forum to no avail as everything I have looked at is regarding the 3rd or 4th model Enfield. Any help is appreciated!

The first model had spring bands and was rifled. I have a 2nd model. The 3rd model was what was imported and had the stock shorten a bit and had screw bands. To my knowledge the 1st model was not used in the Civil War.

I believe you can find the information you are looking for on the 1st Model P53 in
"British Soldiers Firearms 1850-1864" by CH Roads. Copies are somewhat scarce
and expensive, it is $85 used on Amazon.

When I was at MTSU, I borrowed a copy through inter-library loan from Johns Hopkins
so that might be an option for you, too.

Beginning in 1861 a lot of the surplus arms from the Crimean War were sold to American buyers, included were "obsolete" 1st Model P/53 Enfields.

1st Model Enfields had screw clamping bands (it was the 2nd Model Enfield that had the rounded, solid bands and band springs.) The rear sights had rounded sides on the 1st Model Enfields and the hammer a pronounced curl.

The Rifle Shoppe sells all the modern made parts IF you want to assemble your own replica 1st Model Enfield. Just "Google" up their website and then look under "English Arms."

I appreciate the help guys! I will see if I can find that source, "British Soldiers Firearms 1850-1864," in my local library or perhaps the library at my college.

            Re: First model Enfield information?

1st Model Enfields were definitely rifled. The official British Service arm prior to the adoption of the 1st Model Enfield was the .75 Caliber P-51. Both arms were used in the Crimean War by the British army.

            Also, go to:

and pose your question. This is the website of the Muzzleloading Association of Great Britain. They have several Enfield experts that can answer almost any question about the history of the various models of the P-53 Enfield.
