  • Name sewing

Well, I've searched and searched to no avail. Are there any pictures of surviving examples of jackets with the name of the individual sewn into it?

    Re: Name sewing

    Sir,

I do not know of any surviving examples of sewn names onto garments. But there are many garments that have names written into the garment. Not a whole lot different then the way we mark now....

I have seen examples of items that had initials sewn into them. But not full names.

    Thanks.

      Re: Name sewing

I have never seen any pictures of original uniforms with the owner's name sewn onto it. I have seen many pictures of uniforms with the owner's name written onto it. Echoes of Glory has several such uniforms.

Confederate soldiers were allowed to wear homespun uniforms right up until the end of 1862. Some regiments, especially Western units, wore homespun uniforms up until the end of 1863. I would imagine some of these uniforms had names stitched onto them.

According to some accounts I have read, the casualties were so heavy at Cold Harbor in June of 1864 that many Union soldiers sewed their names into their jackets. That way, if they were killed, they could be identified. I do not know if any of these uniforms these survive.
