  • My new website on the CW soldier, his uniform and equipment.

    Hi everyone,

Years ago I spent a lot of time at the National Archives, collecting information about Civil War units. Over the years I gathered quite a bunch of information, including seven binders full of inspection reports which I photocopied one page at a time, I’m sure to the annoyance of everyone trying to use the machines. I was fascinated by the amount of detailed information that survives, the kind of details I think most assumed didn’t exist, and how much or little that info agreed with what I’d read or been told.

I had intended to do something with all this, but experience in the book business taught me that the release of information in that form wasn’t practical. Several months ago, I rediscovered these materials and became interested in them again, and realized that technology had now given me a way to share what I’d uncovered with as many people as possible.

So, “like lightning out of a clear sky”, I’m announcing the arrival of my website, Blue and Gray Marching, at www.blueandgraymarching.com

I hope you’ll get a chance to check it out. So far I have three corps worth of CS inspection reports up, along with several short articles including an analysis of the “Punch Bowl” prisoner photo with very clear enlargements. More reports and articles will be added over the next few months. I will also be attempting a major project relating to Gettysburg. I hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew with that one.

One last thing before I shut up. You’ll notice the website is very Reb-centric due to the focus of my research back then. I’m going to try to even that out, but if any Federal specialists out there have documentable information they’d like to share (or even articles) please contact me sometime. I promise you’ll always be prominently acknowledged.

    Thanks!

    Fellas,

Jim shared this website with me yesterday afternoon and I spent about 3 hours on it. Excellent, excellent site. Tons of info on there. The inspection reports are worth your time.

Jim, I take it you are interested in Eastern Theater only?

"Woolens: 80,000 yds. Sufficient to make 28,000 suits (a suit meaning one jacket and one pair pants)."

Taken from the letter from the Richmond Depot... That is 2.86 yards per suit. That's cloth saving right there. A real eye opener, and something I have always taken great interest in! Good stuff.

Bryant sent a message my way to check the website out. For example I was interested in Archer/McComb's Brigade returns: http://www.blueandgraymarching.com/t...s-brigade.html

The inspection reports were very interesting, especially the mention of too many officers commanding 4 to 5 men in a company.

Also the report of Hood's Corps: http://www.blueandgraymarching.com/a...oods-corp.html shows that balance of Lorenz muskets and the .58 calibre Enfield musket. Great to see some AoT reports too.

All in all a Great read!

Thanks fellas. Mr. Dickinson, it's not my intention to slight the West on my site, but when I collected a lot of this info I did concentrate on the ANV. I have some stuff in the works that should help things, and I do at least have that Hood's Corps inspection article up so far.

And I was only able to locate a handful of AOT inspection reports from the late war series. I don't know for sure if they didn't survive the war, were not microfilmed, or I just haven't located them. I'll be uploading the ones I do have soon. And of course I'll be working to get some more Federal content, east and west, in there in the near future.

Jim, would you be interested in Western Federal documents? And don't call me Mr. Dickinson. Day-um, I'm not that old yet, and rarely do my middle school students call me that. :o

Ha. Sure thing, Warren. Actually, I'd be very interested in Western Federal information. It's my weakest area among the material I've compiled so far.

Wow, there was still quite a few smoothbores in the ranks in Hood's Corps in 1864.
