Re: Correct North Carolina Infantryman Arms

One of the things i have been doing is trying to find out how long the troops where carrying the 42 Springfield, so i could give a more accurate impression of a NC soldier. But one of the things i have found is that in many of the photos of the living or dead soldiers from north Carolina is that there is not hardly any photos of them carrying 42's at this point in the war. Instead i found that there is mainly 53 enfeilds and 61 Springfield. Something that i think is that there is not that many confederates carrying 61 Springfield in today's reenacting. We need moor confederates carrying 61's at this point in the war. I also found a bunch of photos with the troops carrying the Mississippi and Fayetteville rifle. Unfortunately we cant carry these rifles.

Kirk; I'd like to see the photographs you reference of soldiers armed with Fayetteville rifles. Thus far, alas, they have escaped my notice.

Austin - photos are a rather poor way to determine the arms of more that 100,000 soldiers. Neither is a poll on our "opinions." Ordnance Returns are the way to go. It might be tedious, but you will get a much better idea of the truth. Is your unit a specific North Carolina regiment?

I don't see any reference to Greg Mast's image book on NC soldiers. Assume you have already looked through that one.

I think you would be safe going with the Pattern 1853 Enfield, as others have said.
