  • British Leather Gear in Federal Service

When doing a Federal impression and carrying an Enfield, if your research does not indicate what leather they carried, how prevalent was the use of British Cartridge Box, British bayopnet scabbard and frog, etc.............and if so, any buff leather present(ie, like the closure flap on the Enfield Box).

    Thanks in advance, Mike

Try using the search function. This subject was covered in depth some time back.

        Hallo!

"When doing a Federal impression and carrying an Enfield, if your research does not indicate what leather they carried, how prevalent was the use of British Cartridge Box, British bayopnet scabbard and frog, etc............"

        In brief..

British accoutrement sets for Federal troops are very rare, but do appear such as on some Massachusetts' units such as the 6th or 44th as part of 3,000 sets the state purchased circa 1861. Later, Massachusetts sold off the surplus accoutrements enidng up in other states- so odds-and-ends "pieces" also appear- I am reminded the Lookout Mountain image of a company where ONE man is wearing an "Enfield snake belt" (but it could have been a prize liberated from a Rebel.

Some states initially contracted for P1853-3 Enfields that included a full set of "accoutrements" but as "stands of arms" that did not NUG include complete sets of "Enfield" gear.

Still being brief.... Unless one is doing those early War Massachusetts regiments with Enfields and full sets of "Enfield" accoutrements, IMHO they would be too rare to be Historically Correct or PEC- especially when mixed in with "Springfield" accoutrements" in the same Federal unit.
