  • Re: Soldiers wearing English accoutrements

    FWIW, the 38th and 61st Georgia were brigaded together. Not sure what their early war experiences were.

      Bryant, this is from my notes on the 38th and 61st Georgia;

      "The most interesting thing to know about Wright’s and the unidentified men’s 61st Georgia regiment and Howard’s 38th Georgia, is that they were both in the same brigade, Lawton’s Brigade of Jackson’s Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. The 61st Georgia was mustered into service in July 1861, and the 38th in October’61. Before being sent to Virginia the 61st – formerly 7th Georgia Battalion- and the 38th - formerly Wright’s Legion- were stationed around Savannah where they were issued with Enfield rifle muskets to replace the 0.69 calibre muskets."

        The Savannah connection makes sense. They were there when the early shipments of conplete english sets arrived. Recall also the 45th Ga soldier killed during the 7 days who also had full english kit. Sounds like a case of right place right time for the 38th Ga.

          i've got a question about Federal soldier wearing british accoutrements

          when we look picture of CS soldier (who wear the correct type of british cartridge box belt) , the cartridge box belt look like more width than the federal who wear british accoutrements . Do someone know if the federal army have made a custom order to the brisitsh manufacturer or don't use the british import cartridge belt and use another type of cartidge box belt ?
