  • Correct Font Size, Hardtack Box

    Building a hardtack box.

Does anyone know the correct font type and sizes for the box top lettering?

I doubt you will get an answer as simple as your question since hardtack boxes were not generated using computer style typography. There is also no "universal" standard for hardtack box labels that would answer your question. Clear info on the specific box you are trying to reproduce would help a great deal. Stencils for packing boxes were frequently hand cut from sheet brass and varied according to the company providing the crates, time frame, and craftsman making the stencils. Your best bet for an accurate reproduction is to find a photo of an appropriate original box, blow it up to the correct dimensions then transfer it to an appropriate stencil material and cut it out. Before you are done you will undoubtedly discover that it can be a lot of work to make a correct stencil.
