  • Federal Overcoat Button Holes

    Hello All,

I am finishing my 15th Iowa Impression and have come to the Federal Overcoat. I am respectfully asking for some help with photos of Button Holes on Federal Overcoats.

Would anyone have some nice closeup pictures to share? (Both Cape and Coat)

I am excited to tackle this last stage of the Coat. Thanks to all who reply.

    Respectfully,

    Michael Collins

Found this in less than five mouse clicks because it's on my links page. This is something you should have found if you had googled it yourself.

Holes are cut and stitching is underway!

                    Re: Federal Overcoat Button Holes

Something I noticed when I had my overcoat made:

The way the cape is sewn to the collar makes it difficult to button the top button of the cape. I thought this was ridiculous and I cut the top of cape where it was sewn to the collar so that it could be buttoned all the way up easily. I then stitched together the top of the cape where I had cut it away from the collar.

Walked into the old Gettysburg Electric Map museum where they had uniform items on display in the lower level, because I knew they had a couple of overcoats on display. Took a good look at one of them and noticed that whoever owned it made the exact same modification to the top of the cape as I did.

I think some of the most satisfying moments of reenacting is when you are in a situation where you have to improvise or modify to take care of a situation. You do, and you read or find out later that some soldier was in the same fix you were in, and modified or improvised the exact same way you did. Makes you feel like you're on the right track.
