Found this in the CSR of the Ordnance Officer of J.K. Jackson's Brigade of the Army of Tennessee, usually composed of Mississippi and Georgia troops. The Georgians seemed to be allergic to Cartridge Box Belts.....

It wouldn't be uncommon for that to be the case. There would be a number of men in any regiment without arms, usually men who had been in hospital or detached, or even new volunteers/conscripts would arrive back in camp with no arms and there would be a wait to get some.

Of note: The lack of gun slings and the near uniformity of the regiments in arms, that is very unusual in AoT Regiments by this time.

These reports cover times when Jackson's Brigade was in 3 different Divisions of the AoT, in the spring of 1863 they were in Breckenridge's large division, but when Breckenridge was sent to Mississippi to try and help Vicksburg, Bragg stripped two brigades (including Jackson's) from his division because he had a grudge against Breckenridge. Jackson's Brigade ended up in Cheatham's Division until early 1864 when it finally landed in Walker's mainly Georgia division. After Atlanta the brigade was broken up, with the regiments landing in different divisions. Jackson was sent to Savannah to help defend the city.

Will, thanks for posting this. Jackson's Brigade is a sort of mystery for some of us. We know it was broken up around the time of the Battle of Atlanta, but we've (Robby Mitchell and I) have not been able to find the exact date. But, again this is great information.

This is great information. I've been tyrying to get a handle lately on what ordnance departments did and didn't do. I'm wondering why haversacks, knapsacks and canteens are included in an ordnance inventory.

Interesting to see the large switch-out of Stevens Brigade in April '64 of their 69 cal smoothbores for Austrian 54 cal. rifles. Also interesting to not see any knapsacks listed on the turn-in lists from the various brigades. Does that mean that the men were keeping them, or dumping them on the road?

Any chance of Granbury's Texas Brigade being in a future list?
