Boiling a sack coat

I looked throught the forums to find an answer to this one so I'm sorry if this is already covered.
As we all know Confederates did use captured equipment, and I've heard that they boiled sack coats and dyed them. My question is how would one go about boiling out the old dye and then dye it. My thought is boiling out the current dye and then using a combination of rust and ashto give it some color again any suggestion?
