  • confederate frock coat question....

    gentlemen,

i am currently drafting a frock coat pattern, and after many evenings of throwing things and saying ugly words, i finally have the proper bell-shaped skirt. i was just curious if any one of you have ever seen an original c.s. frock with a one piece skirt. no pleats, no scallops, just one piece of cloth that goes all the way around. if so, does it have aot ties, or anv affiliation? thank you.

    Richard,

I've examined about 50 original CS frock coats. I've seen a lot of odd stuff on and/or in them, but NEVER have I seen one with a one piece skirt. Not a one!

Without scallops - ABSOLUTELY!! One piece - NEVER! Not the best use of cloth especially from narrower period looms.

Skirt pieces are usually cut on a bias correct? Width of cloth was usually 27 or 36 inches? Oh...and without a vent in that thaar skirt, your sure to have difficulties sitting them hand-parts down with any comfort and ease.

Yoou really should consider employing a reputable vendor from the VENDOR APPROVED LIST, and have them to cut you one.

Are you saying that the original or the period pattern you're drafting the pattern from has a one piece skirt and you're wondering if this is common?

Or are you just making something up then trying to find supporting documentation?

If yes to the former, tell us more about your original or source. If yes to the latter....

It's getting redundant, but I concur with the above posts.

I've handled scores of originals and have never run across a one piece skirt. Plenty without pleats etc. but never one cut from a single piece.

There are good patterns out there already if you are just looking for a generic coat to make. If you are copying an extant piece why not just stick to what's there on the original coat?

            Cheers.

the pattern that i am drafting is the commonly seen style with the vent, etc. i was just curious about the posibility of there being another style, such as the one that i mentioned. i thank you gentlemen kindly for your replys, and i believe that i've got my answer.

              best regards,

                Pat,

Which patterns would you recommend? I'm just curious.

                Thanks,

                  Phil,

I got a good result from the Homespun pattern. It's taken off a single breasted coat, quilted, scallops, etc with Kentucky provenance. It took my wife, a seasoned seamstress, about 40 hours to put together. Not a project for the faint of heart or the novice. Del Warren of James Country mechantile sells the pattern.
