If you ever find yourself in the Wilmington, NC area stop by and take a look at
Fort Fisher State Historic Site. I had the pleasure of meeting Clyde Wilson who
is one of the interpreters at the park. Clyde is a retired Army Sergeant First Class
from Fort Bragg who served on General Hugh Shelton's staff as one of his
Battle Staff NCOs. This was very evident in the very professional map orientation
and battle overview that Clyde gave of the battles to take Fort Fisher. He is very
passionate about the United States Colored Troops and the role that the XXV Corps
played at Fort Fisher. Fort Fisher was the largest joint service operation since
Vicksburg and involved Rear Admiral David Porter, General Benjamin Butler (fired after
the first attempt to take the fort), General Alfred Terry, General Braxton Bragg, and
General Robert Hoke. There's not much remaining of the original fort as the ocean
has claimed quite a bit of the perimeter but it is definitely worth checking out
this underlooked battle.
