  • Wool weight

I am looking to get my first fatigue blouse and am more than a little confused. What is the "proper" wool weight for a sack coat? I have seen measurements from 5oz up to 18oz. The jacket I am looking at is a lined coat in which both layers are listed as 18oz. I did search on the site and on the net but was unable to pin down a concrete answer.

    Thanks for any input!

    Re: Wool weight

I've seen various statements about proper weight and will allow others to chime in. (Note : have you tried the search function? You might find your answer there.) My first thought concerned the identity of the vendor or manufacturer of the coat. If it's from a streamer sutler, take that as a hint that there might be a problem with the weight. If you're looking at something from an approved vendor or a vendor recognized by folks at the higher end of the spectrum, you'll be fine.

Regarding fabric, there are other features to consider other than just weight. There are also but web/weave and dye process which should be considered.

      Re: Wool weight

      Hallo!

      Longer discussion aside...

Quartermaster specs called for dark blue flannel weighing 5 1/2 ounces to the yard, with the material running 27 inches wide. The requirements set that at three yards of 3/4 blue flannel.

To add to what Curt state above, the 3/4 wide flannel measures 27 inches from selvedge to selvedge. A double width was also produced and used that was 57 inches wide, or 6/4. The latter material would be double the weight since it's twice as wide which may account for some confusion.
