  • White CS or Union issue knapsack photo?

I have read all the past threads on CS and union issued white knapsacks. Has anyone commented on the photo of one in MEMORABILIA OF THE CIVIL WAR by William C. Davis on page 22-23? I tried to run the name through both CS and union records but nothing matching a 5th Regt. with the name J. B. Frothingham. Any thought on the type of knapsack this may be? Photo is un credited as to what museum or collection it is in. Jim Hensley

      Looks like its:

Pvt. John B. Frothingham, Co. "K" 5th Massachusetts Infantry (3 Months Militia, 1861) This regiment fought at 1st Bull Run and was mustered out shortly after that.

James B. Frothingham, age 22, residence Charlestown, MA. Enlisted 5/15/61 at Charlestown, MA as a private. Mustered in 5/15/61 into Company K, 5th Mass. Infantry. Mustered out 7/31/61 at Boston, MA.

Coincidentally another original "white" knapsack from the same regiment, used by Sgt. Benjamin Barnard of Co. B, was sold at the John Henry Kurtz auction in 2008. It is made from untreated linen nailed to a rough wooden frame and has russet leather straps riveted into place. Photos courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

          Hallo!

I knew how to change the listing, and the first post.. but alas not the rest.

          Sigh.
