  • Source for Period Correct Shoe Polish?

My friend, any leads to a period correct shoe polish for a mid-Victorian gentleman's footwear?

I am also struck by the shine on exposed cavalry boots in period photos, how did they get that shine (sheer elbow grease)?

As always, much appreciate the comments,

    Bob

I would imagine that it is just elbow grease and boot polish that produce that shine.

So far as sources for shoe care products, check out Missouri Boot & Shoe (http://www.missouribootandshoe.com/) and Leder Arsenal (http://www.lederarsenal.com/en/pages...acking-232.php).

Under "Relics and Reproductions" you'll find Crown leather soap (p.21) and a preservation wax (p.22). Both are formulated with period ingredients. There is also a link to an article with instructions for period leather care.

      Hope this helps.

OK, I know there is a lot of info on Ken's site but can someone give me a clue how to find anything without scrolling through every page? I did search for his preservation wax but came up empty

from previous thread found in search:

I've purchased my blackening from a Rev War supplier named Ray Najecki (just do a google search). He offers "blackball" which has served my needs well for a number of years.

            Christopher-

The preservation wax is under the "Relics and Reproductions" section, page 22. The Crown is on page 21.

C&D Jarnagin sells a period blackening or you could make your own using beeswax, lampblack and a little tallow. What Ken is selling is a soap used to clean the leather before you use the wax.

Probably could...Lord knows I'm on there enough. I've probably got a better idea of what's on there than he does ;)

On page 21. On page 22 he has available a preservation wax, available in both clear and black.
