Hi Will, thankfully this is a modern myth - the Tait you speak of (also 63rd Tenn as you rightly point out) was unharmed. Chas Childs told me via e-mail, Fred Adolphus has seen it since and it's pictured in detail in his Tait book. I don't know who started this rumour but it keeps popping back up every now and then!
