I've been in touch with the director of The Cannonball House in Macon, GA, which houses an original jacket worn by Pvt. Francis Freeman of Co. C 2nd Battalion Georgia Infantry. The director described it as a Type 1 Richmond jacket but had no additional information or photographs on hand. I made a more detailed request about having a photographer document this jacket in person, and possible other original CS items they have, since I cannot travel from Kalamazoo to Macon to see it in person. Has anyone here seen this jacket in person or taken notes/photographs? Any additional information would be fantastic since I'm not aware of this garment being previously documented.
Francis M. Freeman was a resident of Bibb County, GA when he enlisted on June 15th, 1861. He mustered in on the same day as a private in Company C, 2nd Battalion Georgia Infantry, which first served in the Departments of Norfolk and Dept. of North Carolina before joining the First Corps of the ANV. Freeman was wounded on June 22nd, 1864, at Petersburg, shows up as hospitalized in Macon, GA on Oct. 15th and finally as a prisoner of war in Macon on April 20th, 1865.
A small photograph of the jacket can be found here: http://www.cannonballhouse.org/civil_war_museum.html With some luck I will be able to update this thread and add new information/photos if the director is agreeable to having a professional photographer document the jacket.
