Were hobnails used by confederate confederate troops in any large capacity?
Wondering if it is alright to add them to my brogans for authenticity?

    Re: Hobnails

You rarely see hobnails on shoes on original Photograhps( when men are shoing their soles while sitting or pictures of fallen men). Someties you see a row of nails around the rim of the shoes and I assume those were sewn sole shoes and the hobnails protected the sole stitching, sometimes you have floral or diamond designs like the shoes that were worn by th crew of the Cairo but mostly you do not see hobnails on shoes either US or CS.

      Re: Hobnails

There is a pretty well known pair of British import shoes in Echoes of Glory apparently the same type as the British army wore, shod with heel irons and small hobnails. I know of no surviving Confederate made shoes that have them. Add them for authenticity if your shoes look like English ones, otherwise - hard to say.
