  • Charleston Frock Coat Lining?

    Folks,

I am looking for either photographs or some good, detailed descriptions of the lining of original CS officer's frock coats produced in Charleston, SC. I have a lot of ideas of what I *think* the might have looked like, but would like some concrete information.

So, if you have examined one hands-on, or if you've seen pics, or have pics, I would be very grateful for the information.

If you have images of such a frock, but do not feel comfortable sharing publicly, I would be grateful if you would contact me off-line from the forum.

    Thanks, folks!!

    John-

Check out this link. If you browse through the catalog this gentleman has a couple of South Carolina frocks on his site.

    I hope it helps.

Not a frock per say, but a custom made item.

Looks like a red lining in the skirt.

John, I will be in Charleston next week and I can take a look at the coats that are on display in the UDC museum.

John, I was unable to get into the UDC museum today when I was in Charleston but I did get a chance to go to the Charleston museum. Their exhibit of CW uniforms is very slim and hard to get a good look with the VERY dim lighting they have. However I was able to get a decent look at the coat worn by Dr. James Postell. From what I could tell the material appeared to be indigo dyed flannel and it was fully lined to the skirt and the sleeves lined in muslin.
Sorry I wasn’t able to get some more examples for you but next time I am in Chas (maybe a week or two) I will check back with the UDC and see what I can find for you.

                Tyler,

Thanks for the info. So, it looked like a dark blue woolen?

Did you get a sense of what the quilting pattern looked like (simple vs complex), etc.?

                Thanks, again!

                  Re: Charleston Frock Coat Lining?

John, the material did appear to be a blue woolen from what I could see but I wanted to double check. I contacted one of curators today and she said that the material is actually striped black and grey silk but she wasn’t sure on the type of quilting. They also have several more frocks in storage that she said she would be more than happy to pull out for closer examination. If you are interested I would be happy to set something up so we can have a look. In the meantime she is going to send me a few photographs that she has on hand and as soon as I get them I will pass them along.

                      Re: Charleston Frock Coat Lining?

See attached. The two photos of the officer's frock are courtesy of Neill Rose and I believe that the garment is in the collection of The Charleston Museum. Unfortunately I do not have an ID for this coat. The close up photo with the Charleston tailor's label comes from the (really cool) jacket of Capt. Robert Chisolm, 1st SC Sharpshooters. Both of these linings are the same and appear to be a somewhat coarsely woven marled alpaca on a brown warp of unknown fiber content.

Additional photos of Capt. Chisolm's jacket can be seen here: http://www.garyhendershott.net/civil-war/146

The link I provided shows two linings from Charleston Frocks that are in the Charleston Museum

                          http://s1171.photobucket.com/user/ty...rwood/library/#

The brown silk lining is from a coat worn by Edward Robinson who is thought to have been in the Washington Artillery and the Gold Silk is from the coat owned by Capt. Horace Sams of the 11th SC and the skirt is also lined in the same material.

Some Frocks had 'Pillow Ticking' as the liner.

                              Mr. Hernandez,

Welcome to the Authentic-Campaigner. One of the things we require is to provide documentation to support assertions or claims in our posts.

What is the source of your information regarding "pillow ticking" for the lining of officer frock coats made in Charleston, SC?
Have you seen this in a museum?
                              Do you have photographs?

                              Please share.

                              Thank you.
