  • Shirting Material: Woven -VS- Printed?

'From actual experiences', comparing the two types of reproduction nineteenth century shirting materials, which type lasts longer without significant deterioration, the woven or the printed pattern?

In my experience, woven lasts longer. Of course the question around here is, what are you trying to portray? Shirts wore out at the time, so an authentic print wearing thin may be what you need.

By its very nature and construction, yarn dyed woven patterns of the same weight and weave will retain their color and structure longer than a printed cloth, where the dye is only deposited on the surface of the goods.

Of course, sun exposure, washing, detergents, and your own body chemistry will affect the outcome as well. I recently reviewed a yarn dyed original shirt in which one color was completely dissolved from the weave, leaving all others completely intact.

Yassir, I used to be Mrs. Lawson. I still run period dyepots, knit stuff, and cause trouble.
