  • Private Purchase Drawers - Drawers

As is known and documented, many men's drawers that were either issued or private purchase were produced in flannel, cotton, or knit in either bleached white or natural (tan) color. I have found many oblique references to private purchase drawers being produced in other colors, but as of this time have no been able to find any good strong evidance of this.

Does any one know of such evidance in regard to colors of drawers other then white or natural (tan), perhaps even patterned?

    Thank you.

There is a pair of red drawers on display in the Atlanta History Center.

Oh yes, sorry. I should have added a caveat, besides that particular pair, but thank you.

I should note I am hoping to find some documentation for the 150th cedar creek next year.

I recall reading an account of a pair of red drawers lined with yellow (wool x2) making their way into a care package sent from home. If I find it, I'll post it.

Thank you, I'd be much obliged if you can find it or recall any details on the source.

Only a few months late. From the diary of Kate Stone.

"We were hard at work until sundown on Brother's flannels. As it will be so cold and he suffers so even here in the winter he is so sensitive to the cold we are making the shirts and drawers double, red on one side and yellow on the other. They look funny to me but are real warm. I wonder if he will like them." - 9/18/1861

"He certainly did laugh over the gay red and yellow flannel suits we sent him in the fall. He did not wear them at all but gave them to Uncle Bo who sported around in them to the delight of the whole camp where they were a great joke. We will do better this time." - 5/12/1861
