  • Augusta Arsenal Cartridge packing box question

I am trying to reproduce an Augusta Arsenal cartridge packing box for Enfield rifles, but I am having difficulty finding pictures of an original showing how it was marked on the end. The one original I have found is clearly marked AUGUSTA ARSENAL GA on the side, but has no pics of the end markings. I want to properly mark the end where it says the type of round packed in it. I have not been able to find my answers using the search function.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,
    Mike Dougherty

Have you seen this one: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200805A30.html

      Really great link, Bob!

While searching for the example from which to make an accurate reproduction is sometimes challenging, I always appreciate the hunt that people undertake to get it right. In this case, the example is elusive, but I wonder if Kennesaw Mountain NHP or the Atlanta History Center (I may have my nomenclature wrong here) have either photos or actual artifacts?

Conversely, many CS ammo boxes were not marked at all, save the caliber and type, and if you are looking for a "generic" stencil for marking boxes, A.J. Hamler's Civil War Woodworking has several examples, as well as a history of construction. While not all-inclusive, it may help you with your reproduction. I used his plans to good effect.

      Good luck, at any rate.

thank you for the link. I have seen that one before. The one I was hoping to copy was the one at the Augusta Museum of History. It is a box associated with 1864. I'm assuming that since the arsenal was around prior to the war that it probably follows a similar style as federal boxes, but I wanted to try and see for sure before I go ahead and genarically mark it.

I would contact the Augusta Museum of History directly. I am sure they can take photographs for you, but they may charge a fee for that service.
