  • English import overcoats

Hey all, does anyone have any documentation as to when these coats would have first appeared in the ANV? I have looked through cadet grey and butternut brown but cannot find a solid timeframe for issue to the troops.

    Regards

    Peter,

    S. Isaac Campbell were supplying 'infantry' and 'artillery' greatcoats, as bought by Caleb Huse from December 1861 onwards.

I know they were purchased early on... But is that when they Actually made it through the blockade and were distributed ?

This invoice was for 200 infantry greatcoats and 450 artillery greatcoats. They were shipped on the steamer 'Economist' which arrived in Charleston in late March 1862. Of course their could have been greatcoats on the Fingal as well as the Gladiator. The Fingal arrived safely in November 1861. By the end of 1862, Caleb Huse had exported "8,375 greatcoats" at a cost of £13,294 17s 8d.
