Chevrons

I know the Confederate stripes were never used, however there are countless pictures of the Union Chevrons. The problem is I cannot find any regulation; order covering them; does anyone have any information? Thank you.

Maybe this is what you're looking for?

"Regulations for the Army of the Confederate States, 1863.":

Paragraph 1529 page 406: The rank of non commissioned officers will be marked by chevrons on both sleeves of the uniform coat and the overcoat, above the elbow, of silk and worsted binding, half an inch wide; color the same as the edging of the coat; points down, as follows:

1530. For a Sergeant Major--three bars and an arc in silk.
1531. For a Quartermaster Sergeant--three bars and a tie in silk.
1532. For an Ordnance Sergeant--three bars and a star in silk.
1533. For a First (or Orderly) Sergeant--three bars and a lozenge in worsted [wool].
1534. For a Sergeant--three bars in worsted.
1535. For a Corporal--two bars in worsted.

Thanks but I am looking for the justification for the flags on the chervons for the Color guard. Until the other day I had never heard of it but a sutler is selling them (see inserts) when I started researching it I found example in GAR museums; orginial pictures and with Don Troiani (someone know for his research and authenticy); but nothing anywhere tells you if it was a amendment to the regulations or what? There were no know examples of it for the Confederacy. Thanks again.

Hallo!

In brief and to over simplify a bit...

There were the "regulations" and then there were variations on the theme done by state and local units. As with the Ordnance manual, the Confederates copied/plagiarized/cloned and adapted from the Federal manuals. There is no special insignia or designation for a color sergeant other than his sergeant chevrons and/or trouser stripes. But when one gets into state units, militias, and other local units things can be different.
