Here is a photo of some boys using some various sized boxes for seats around Petersburg that may be helpful. They all seem pretty plain and of similar construction, but one seems to have sapling bands similar to a hardtack box.
Here is another photo with several examples of re-purposed boxes that were more than likely ration boxes previously.
There is a small box barely visible behind the boards to the left of the man. It has a shiny tin basin sitting on it and a kettle in front of it. The boards look to have some faint stenciling on them and were probably box lids or crates as well. The next box is under the makeshift cot and appears to be the size of a hardtack box. Just above the cot and further back in the tent is another being used as a cubby of sorts. It looks as if legs were nailed to it and is full of personal effects. The man is sitting on one that is on end and a similar size to the one with the tin basin sitting on it. To the right of him further back is yet another shape and size sitting on a table.
They all appear to be of the same simple construction as the ones in the previous photo. They look as if they emptied them out and started using them fairly quickly to me, as most don't appear overly weathered.
These may get you fairly close to the general look at least,
hope that helps.
