  • Crown and Company leather Purchase from CS QM Dept.

I was going through some records on enameled accouterments coming from the Columbus Ga. area. This was a letter I found in the RG 109 group for Crown and Co. also known as N. Crown and Co. It would appear that the QM Dept. were furnishing this maker with the leather needed to complete the sets of enameled cloth accouterments that they had contracted through the Ord. Dept. for.

    Rec'd Columbus June13, 1864
From Maj. F.W. Dillard QM one hundred sixty six pounds of Leather cuttings
for which paid him four hundred sixteen dollars and 24 cents

That is quite a hefty bill even today. I am curious as to what their definition of leather cuttings really is and if they were able to find a use for every piece.
