Im wanting to put together a army of Tn impression during chickamauga. I know they were pretty shoddy and rugged. But what uniforms were worn, where and when were they issued and what gear did they have. Thanks

A place to start would be impression standards for one of the many living histories done there.

There is little evidence they were ragged in September 1863.

A AoT artillerist wrote on september 29th in his journal ( Our first impression was partly caused by the color of their uniform, but more by its uniformity and the superior style of their equipments, in haversacks, canteens, and knapsacks. The contrast between them and Gen'l Braggs motley, ragged troops was striking in extreme) got it off the blue and grey.

Searches will help you decipher that quote ( and the MANY others that are relevant).

Does he say Longstreet's men have new and whole clothes or matching equipment? Perhaps Bragg's men had a ragged looking appearance due to a lack of uniformity. Ragged can be used in several ways beyond torn attire.

While he does not say so that is what the site says hes talking about. You can look up blue and grey. Its in the articles and called " it was easy to distinguish from the soldiers of Bragg's army.

Hunter, your impression will almost certainly depend upon the unit that you are portraying. During the time of the Chickamauga Campaign the Army of the Tennessee was over 60,000 men and not all 60,000 plus would be reissued uniforms and equipage at the same time. With that being said appearances between regiments, companies and individual soldiers would vary depending upon where the uniform came from: i.e. Columbus Depot, Atlanta or even clothing from home. Then you also need to consider when their last issue was. Another thing to consider is reading one soldiers account doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s how an entire army appeared. After all that is one set of eyes looking at a very large battle.
I would recommend getting your hands on some other firsthand accounts from before during and after the battle. Maybe try to find some original photographs through the Library of Congress web page. Definitely get a copy of Cadet Grey and Butternut brown if you do not already have it. Another possible route would be to contact the Museum of the Confederacy for records. Best of luck researching your impression!
