  • Company Books

    Hello all,
I've been looking for information regarding books maintained by each company. I've found a few online resources showing morning report books. What I can't find are company order books or the like. Can anyone recommend a source for these, or even an example of an original that I could use to base my reproduction on? Also, has anyone seen the Sullivan Press book? I'd like to obtain one of these, but find him hard to get ahold of.

Here are some examples from Delaware, just looking for any other sources out there. Thank you

        Re: Company Books

Article XIII, section 127 of The Revised Regulations for the Army of the United States (applicable to volunteer units upon muster in) requires the following: " one descriptive book, one clothing book, one order book, one morning report book, each one quire, sixteen inches by ten. One page of the descriptive book will be appropriated to the list of officers; two to the non-commissioned officers; two to the register of men transferred; four to register men discharged; two to register deaths; four to register of deserters - the rest to the company descriptive list."

Once the unit was mustered out of federal service, the books were turned over (eventually) to the War Department where some found a permanent home at the National Archives in Washington. If you're interested in original books, that's where they'll be.

        I hope this helps.

I know this is an old thread but is there any new news on company report books? Is there any one reproducing the morning report book other than Sullivan Press? Anyone reproducing proper blank books?

            Re: Company Books

I have not seen any other reproductions of company books outside Sullivan. Blank books are out there depending on what you are specifically after. Button Baron has a soft and hardcover journal with marbled covers and adverts on the inside cover.

              Re: Company Books

I have some photos of a company clothing book from a local museum collection. If they will give permission I will post them. The book is an 8" x11" marbled paper blank book that was ruled out in red ink for the various columns.
