I'm seeking more information on the factory finishes for Colt revolvers supplied to the military; Dragoons, 1851 Navy, & 1860 Army revolvers. It is my understanding that the factroy finishes on Colt's revolvers supplied to the Government differed from the civilian versions of the same revolver. These differences included brass or blued trigger guards and back straps, minimal polish and lesser quality blue on barrels and cylinders, and oil finished walnut stocks, not to mention possible subinspector stamps on revolver parts and possible cartouches on the walnut stocks.
I understand that Colt would do virtually anything for a sale and thus anything in a Colt revolver is possible. However, I have seen martially marked Colt 51 Navy revolvers with both oiled and varnished stocks. I also have seen 61 Navy revolvers with and without any martially markings, but claimed as martial revolvers due to the serial number range.
Can anyone shed any more details on factory finishes and marking for Colt martial revolvers????
Thanks
