  • Calf Skin Knapsack

I have a few questions regarding calfskin knapsacks as I have never seen an original and was curious if one of these would be appropriate for an ANV impression. Would it also work for a AoT impression depending on the unit of course? I know they are available ACWKNAPSACKS.com. Does anyone have any experience with this maker? Do his products meet our standards of authenticity? My final question albeit somewhat generic is what knapsack would be the most versatile for any Southern impression? Which type, in your opinion was seen in armies of both theaters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sold on the Mexican War style packs for a Confederate impression. This type also had extensive use by Federals.

I would stay away from the calfskin knapsacks. They were a Berdan special issue item in 1861 when the regiments mustered. They were a special order item from Tiffany & Co. They MOSTLY gone from the sharpshooter ranks by mid 1863 as they were dropped before going into battle and the troops rarely retreated along that same line of march.
