  • Chaplains in the Confederate Army

    Gents,
I am in need of some information about chaplains in the Confederate Army. Were there any accounts of regular enlisteds or ncos serving duel roles as chaplains? Were they allowed to take up the musket? Thank you

If I were studying on it, I would read "Dr. Quintard, Chaplain C.S.A and Second Bishop of Tennessee"- memoir and Diary of Charles T Quintard. It is a great read for any western theater civil war student. Also you may have read about E.M. Bounds of the 3rd Missouri Infantry; John B. Bannon of the 1st Missouri; William Asbury Parks, the Chaplain of the 52nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry; and David Campbell Kelly of Forrest cavalry Corps.. each one has a unique story in which they grappled with this question as to when and where to 'fight' and served always in the rank n file. There is a Civil War Chaplain's Museum in Lynchburg, VA with a Facebook page and such. Check it out.

Chaplain T.L. Duke of the 19th Mississippi had enlisted in Co. K. at the start of the war before becoming the Chaplain in Nov 1861. At Chancellorsville he lead the regimental skirmish line with rifle in hand.
