  • Confederate forage cap with McDowell brim

I was wondering how comman an item this would be: a Confederate forage cap with the McDowell brim. Options are Eastern v. Western; early war v. mid to late war. While I know to be strictly authentic would depend on what a soldier in a specific unit wore, most of the accounts that I have read just referred to a "cap" or the "soft slouch hat" or similar description. I am looking for generalities here. Colors, buttons, etc are also questions that I would like addressed.

    Thank you,

    Gil,

I am unaware of any "McDowell" type caps manufactured by the Confederate QM. Speaking in general terms, all the extant originals I am aware of are either privately purchased officers caps or early war items.

As an aside, your quote is actually an 18th century quote. I suspect the Alabamian to whom it is attributed was actually quoting one of his revolutionary heroes.

Here's an old thread that I wrote 5+ years ago, back when I was in Kosovo, a few months before I went to Afghanistan.

Just wondering if any new research or photos have surfaced since this was written.

Oh, and Mark Horton was the Captain of our unit in the Birmingham, Alabama area. He was indeed a true hero, as he was killed during a fire at his workplace in 1995. He had already gotten several people out and had gone back inside, searching for more folks, when he died.
