    Re: Necco wafers

You might try contacting Ragged Soldier Sutlery. They have done a lot of research on period candies and other items. They sell some period-correct candies on their site, but Necco Wafers are not on their list.

Hope this helps set you in the right direction.

      Re: Necco wafers

Chase & Co. began selling wafer candy in 1847 after Dr. Oliver Chase developed a lozenge cutter. They were first called Chase's Lozenges, then Peerless Wafers. Wiki, for what it's worth, claims they were called "Hub Wafers" in the 1860s. The name "NECCo" came about after the 1912 merger with New England Confectionery Company... which is what the letters in the name abbreviate.
"Traditional" flavors for NECCo include: chocolate, lemon, lime, orange, clove, cinnamon, wintergreen, and licorice.

Similar recipes exist in confectioners' manuals, but the round wafer shape would have been cut by hand.
Popular flavorings for candy include lemon, orange, clove, cinnamon, ginger, mint, anise, rose, orange blossom, lavender, nutmeg, ...and some of the more "medicinal" sounding flavors like marshmallow lozenges, magnesia lozenges, nitre lozenges, lozenges for the heartburn, steel lozenges.
