Do we have any canteen experts on this forum?I am doing some research for the uniforms and equipment for the 1st Michigan Three Month Volunteer Infantry Regiment. W.T. Tefft of Detroit (25 Woodward Avenue, Detroit) made the canteens for them which he covered with red cloth covers. When visiting a local museum I was looking at a canteen belonging to one of the company commanders of the 1st Michigan Three Month Infantry, said to be from 1863, with a red cloth cover. I am wondering if this is actually one of the canteens made by Tefft of Detroit. The canteen in the museum is not round, but taller than it is wide and the cover appears to be bright red. I am wondering how common red cloth canteen covers were used. Any insights on these canteen photographs? Photograph one is in the museum and photogrpah two is from a photograph of the 1st Michigan Three Month Infantry showing the Detroit made canteen.
